Sushi Party Redux

So, last night we had another sushi party at Dori’s place.  While not having much to celebrate like last time, we figured, “Who needs a reason to have sushi?”.  I mean, simply having a day off is probably a good enough excuse to have a party around these parts.

Some of Dori’s friends sent over some quality ingredients and treats, so I did have at least some materials to work with.  She had a small package of what she though was ginger, but on closer inspection turned out to be fish.  Which, naturally, was better for our needs, considering the previous lack of substantive fillings.  She also had some instant yakisoba, which was a tasty complement to the main course.

This time I decided to cook two batches of rice, instead of trying to cook one huge one (the small pot is not designed for cooking a lot.  Well, obviously.) like last time when I had rice pushing the lid off the cooker.  Despite the lack of accurate measuring tools, it turned out fairly well.

Dori had been stationed in Okinawa before, so we talked about some experiences and interesting things from Japan while I was preparing the sushi.

Probably the most difficult part is the fact that the roller I have, while being of good quality, is its rather inconvenient size.  It is a good deal smaller than a standard sheet of nori (and a thank-you here for the Franklins, for yet another box with the good nori in it!), and cutting the sheet in half seems a little tacky.  Anyway, it works out alright, because the two ends are a little funny looking, which means the chef gets two samples per roll.

Besides the fish, Dori managed to snag some items from dining hall (well, she calls it the galley, or the mess, being in the Navy).  So the other things you see there are some carrots and celery.  Sadly, there were no avocados or cucumbers.

Also, she had some wasabi.  We had some fun with that, as you might imagine, as Michael probably put a little too much on some of his.  I’d put the video on, put the internet around here isn’t really reliable enough for that kind of endeavor.

After our sumptuous feast, we watched the movie “Slumdog Millionaire” which turned out to be pretty good (movie reviews tomorrow!).  I had some movie treats to share, thanks to auntie Ellen (if you’re reading this, I have sent some letters off!).  She sent some of these Hello Kitty marshmallows, which were extremely delicious.
